What is Mental Health Screening? How do I know if I need it?

Updated: Jan 21

Mental health screening is a process of evaluating an individual's mental well-being to identify potential mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, or stress. Screening services can be performed by healthcare professionals, such as psychologists, psychiatrists, or therapists, and can take various forms, including questionnaires, interviews, or standardized assessments. The goal of mental health screening is to provide early detection of mental health issues, prompt treatment, and improve overall mental well-being.

There is no specific time or event that triggers a need for mental health screening. However, it is recommended for individuals to undergo mental health screening if they experience any of the following:

  1. Persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or worthlessness

  2. Changes in sleep or appetite patterns

  3. Increased anxiety or fear

  4. Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  5. Thoughts of suicide or self-harm

  6. Substance abuse or addiction

  7. Increased irritability or anger

  8. Social withdrawal or isolation

  9. Chronic stress or trauma

Additionally, mental health screening can also be part of routine medical check-ups, especially for individuals with a family history of mental illness or those who have undergone significant life changes or stressors. Early detection and treatment of mental health conditions can improve the outcome and quality of life for individuals.

At ARKCC, you may take the opportunity to speak to our Supervised Intern Counsellor for an affordable mental health screening session. It is only RM50 and an hour of time that you need to invest for this check-up. :)
